Born from the death of her parents. The statue’s spirit awakened when young Karris poured all her negative feelings and doubts into it. As the girl suffered, the spirit supported her. It bolstered her, and in return she helped it grow stronger. They were together through her abusive Uncle’s tirades, and the tyranny of her boyfriend Rick Grimes.

She may not know the spirit exists for sure, but there is a good chance her constant belief in something more has to do with her connection to it. It grew with her, and now it has grown too powerful.
